Back Porch Party

Back Porch Party

The Nighthawks

Once again The Nighhawks prove that with great songs and great musicians you can make powerful, moving music in a stripped down acoustic setting. It may not be as loud as a full blown electric set but the energy and emotion is just as strong. Perhaps it’s the lower volume that draws the listener in as it did on the evening that this CD was recorded.
‘Back Porch Party’ is sort of a follow up to their BMA winning acoustic CD ‘Last Train to Bluesville’. Recorded live to tape before a studio audience. No ‘do overs’ or over dubs needed. Just roll tape and play. Mark and the band know how important the audience can be on a live recording. This recording is prove enough. It was recorded at Montrose Studio in Richmond VA by father and son team Bruce and Adrian Olsen.
Of course no one can argue the importance of song selections for any successful session. This session includes Nighthawk originals and classic covers. Mark Wenner is a master of picking great songs by mining gems from all genres of great American music. It all comes out with that Nighthawks touch. As always, Marks mentor, the great Muddy Waters is well represented here. Sounds like a party to me.

John Cocuzzi

Swingster John Cocuzzi has New Orleans flavor and East Coast class, playing with passion and intensity on piano, vibes and drums. For more than 25 years, John has been entertaining crowds in the Washington, DC area and performing alongside jazz and blues greats at festivals across the United States and in Europe. With dynamic style and diverse rhythms, John's innovation breathes new life into familiar tunes, from swingin' and burnin' jazz and blues to lush and sultry ballads. An intuitive performer, John possesses that musical "fire in the belly," igniting the crowd with skillful improvisation, "telling his story" through spirited, high-energy solos. Legend

Legend

Joe Stanley

“Legend” is one label we might apply to Joe Stanley. Others might include mentor, inspiration, trailblazer. Stanley was an integral part of the dynamic Washington D C music scene for more than five decades. His swooping, growling tone combined the dexterity of Plas Johnson and Sil Austin with the raw, emotive wail of Earl Bostic and Red Allen. Joe could hold his own with any of them right up until his passing on January 7, 2007. He kept that muscular, honking sax tradition alive throughout his career. Upon first hearing him in the 1980s, Big Joe Ivlaher likened it to entering a time machine and hearing the best R&B sax men of the 1940s and 50s. Stanley began playing with the D.C. area's premier club band, “The Saxtons,” (AKA “The Saxons”) as a teenager. The band dominated the local pop music club scene. (He kept the band alive in one form or another for more than 30 years.) Joe went on to work with luminaries including Link Wray, Charlie Daniels, Roy Clark, Big Joe Turner, Bill Black's Combo and a then-unknown D.C. talent named Marvin Gaye. Stanley was the first to bring the young, future guitar legend Danny Gatton to the stage, gave D.C. music stalwart Billy Hancock his start in music. He was an inexhaustible source of incredible stories culled from an astonishing career. There was always something to learn from - and about Joe Stanley. Let this special edition tribute continue the education.

Li'l Ronnie & the Blue Beats Featuring Claudia Carawan

This aptly titled CD 'unfinished business' has been a long time in the making and I believe certainly worth the wait. The Blue Beats were a very popular band in the blues / roots scene during the 80's and early 90's. This is their 2nd CD that they started recording way back in 91'. This recording features the soulful gospel tinged vocals of Claudia Carawan. They had written all the songs and had already recorded 8. But you know, sometimes life just gets in the way and things just don't turnout as planned. Well here it is over 23 years later and they're finally getting it finished. The record is a great mix of American musical styles, 12 originals and two choice covers by Ray Charles and Louie Prima.

Andy Poxon

To say Andy has a bright future is an understatement to say the least. Of all the musicians I know personally, tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton is the only musician I know who showed that maturity at that early an age. But let's forget age and just say Andy is an extremely talented guy who really deserves the title "Artist" as guitarist, singer and songwriter and it will be really fun and interesting to see his development. This album of songs represents a young roots musician already developed past his years, and ready to lead us all into the future of pure American blues and roots music.   - Duke Robillard
